The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis is one of the most significant and controversial representations of traditional American Indian culture ever produced. It was issued in a limited edition from 1907-1930 and was sold by subscription. The volumes were printed on the finest paper with expensive binding. The price was prohibitive for all but the most avid collectors and libraries. The set sold for about $3,000 in 1907 and rose to about $4,200 by 1924. This publication continues to exert a major influence on the image of Indians in popular culture. Curtis said he wanted to document "the old time Indian, his dress, his ceremonies, his life and manners." In over 2,000 photographs, Curtis portrayed the traditional customs and lifestyles of eighty Indian tribes. The twenty volumes, are organized by tribes and cultural areas encompassing the Great Plains, Great Basin, Plateau Region, Southwest, California, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. This CD features all 2,000 plus photogravure images divided into 20 albums. A great resource for students, historians, collectors or anyone who would enjoy a fascinating view of early American Indian life. The most elegant and complete collection of American Indian photo's that you will find and it makes a great gift.
